Overview

This Notice of Information (NOI) is to provide project information ahead of the tender which will be advertised separately (approximately 19 June 2025).
This notice is provided as an early indication only of the project scope and will not form part of any future tender documents or contract documents.
This project is to improve the resilience of the SH6 Haast River Bridge by protecting it from river scour.
The SH6 Haast Bridge was built across the Haast River in 1958. The bridge connects a 140km journey between Haast and Wanaka and it is a critical tourism link to the glaciers on the West Coast from Queenstown. Ensuring our key inter-regional links are resilient is a priority for the Government.
The current rock and concrete river protection at the toe of the slope has been in place since c.1980 and has been repaired and replaced on numerous occasions following various flood events. In 2018 Cyclone Fehi initiated substantial degradation of the rock and concrete erosion protection immediately upstream of the Gates of Haast bridge. Since then, the riverbank erosion protection has continued to break up and degrade with several sections now falling into the river.
The scope of this project includes improving the resilience of the existing SH6 Haast bridge pier and abutment by repairing the scour protection and improving the resilience of the scour protection, and includes:
o Deconstruct a section of existing rock and concrete scour protection
o Re-construct a new rock and concrete buttress
o Excavate approx. 100m of trench for new micropile wall and capping beam
o Install approx. 100m of new micro pile wall comprising 21m deep 200mm diam steel cased grout filled micro piles
o Construct stepped reinforced concrete capping beam
o Install four new inclinometer holes to 40m depth
o Construct approx. 30m of new rock revetment (rip rap)
o Complete associated temporary works required to form safe working platforms and to gain access to areas of the site
o Ancillary works including sourcing and stockpiling of appropriate materials required for the works
o Statutory Approval condition requirements
We will seek a contractor with experience and knowledge of works with similar scope to deliver this package of works in this difficult working environment. The successful contractor shall be prequalified to NZTA level 3D and/or 4D.

NOTE: This is NOT the commencement of a tender process or a registration of interest to tender.
