Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology trading as ARA Institute of Canterbury is seismically strengthening and refurbishing ARA’s L Block, located in the City Campus, Christchurch. This is required due to the building having a current NBS rating 20% and, therefore, being marked as an earthquake prone building by the Christchurch City Council. Seismic strengthening is the key driver of this project. To install the new structural elements, such as piles, K bracing and post tensioning, there is a vast amount of demolition to be completed. ARA will also be using the opportunity to refurbish the library; particularly in the areas most affected by the strengthening works.
The key objective of this procurement is to select a suitably experienced and available contractor to complete the seismic strengthening and refurbishing of ARA’s L Block in the City Campus. It is also crucial that the works are to commence in the 2025-26 Christmas holiday period following the decant of the library to C block; this time period is the only time in which the library can shut down to enable the decant to occur.
