Overview

Kiribati Seafood Verification Agency - Adviser Role

* Residential in Tarawa for initial 6-months
* Possible further extension (up to 18-months) as a visiting part-time adviser
* Provide quality technical and strategic advice to the Kiribati Seafood Verification Agency
* New Zealand Government support programme

The New Zealand Government has been requested to provide technical assistance to support the Kiribati Seafood Verification Agency of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Development (MFMRD) to provide official assurances for overseas market access requirements. For the past 3 years Kiribati has been working to establish a Competent Authority to gain approval to export fish and fish products to the EU. This assignment is part of a broader four year joint Fisheries Development and Management Programme for Kiribati, supported by the New Zealand Government.

Objectives of this role:

* Strengthening the leadership and operational competencies of the Kiribati Seafood Verification Agency in its role as Competent Authority responsible for official and technical assurances for overseas market access requirements
* Provide formal training on food safety, EU legislation, sampling, microbiology, fish processing, and other relevant issues
* Facilitate and provide technical advice for inspectors on inspection procedures, auditing and other Competent Authority official control functions
* Coordinate and strengthen a stakeholder network
* Liaise with the Secretary (MFMRD) and Public Service Commission on the requirements and practicalities of setting up a Competent Authority for Christmas Island.
