The Awanui River bank stabilisation extends for 300 m downstream from Church Road bridge as indicated in the drawings in appendix B. The left bank toe armouring and bank stabilization consists of forming a low-level access bench along the length of the School Cut channel, a distance of some 240 m, at a height of 1 m above the average winter flow level. The bank above the bench will be battered at 1 in 2 slope to improve stability.
The bench and bank extending down to bed level will receive rock rip rap scour protection. For the remaining 260 m upstream of the School Cut bank instability is not as severe and there is less risk to property should slippage occur.
Grade control using rip rap will be placed over the full width of the channel in the deeper scour holes to address the ongoing natural lowering of the bed.
Earthworks are proposed for the right bank but these will be conducted by the principal under a separate contract.
