The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Ltd (NIWA) requires a replacement for its 40-year-old research vessel RV Kaharoa.

A new multipurpose Research Vessel is required to meet NIWA’s survey needs now and into the future. These include offshore fisheries surveys (demersal and pelagic trawling and acoustic surveys), oceanographic surveys, hydrographic surveys.

The vessel needs to be capable of deployment and recovery of a range of equipment, including ROVs/AUVs. NIWA have commissioned Naval Architects Skipsteknisk AS to produce a basic vessel design and tender documentation for vessel construction.

We are seeking to engage a suitably qualified and experienced shipyard to accept the Skipsteknisk AS design, and work with Skipsteknisk AS on the detailed design, construction and outfitting of this vessel (approx. length 36m). The proposed completion date to be June 2024.
