Project Description
The project proposes to vertically extend the existing maternity unit and complete the fit out and expansion that was originally allowed for when the new Maternity building was designed and built (2012-2015). The existing shell space at level two will be completed with a 2000m2 fit out of a new paediatric ward and special care baby unit and a new level constructed above (level three) will be fitted out with a new 2000m2 medical laboratory. A new plant room will be constructed on top of level three.
There will be new circulation core to the eastern end of the facility connecting into the existing hospital with two new lifts, a stair core and associated lobby’s, an additional lift and stair core at the western end of the building to provide staff and logistics access to the upper levels as well as stair egress in emergency situations.
The Te Kotuku Redevelopment Project will replace the currently undersized and not fit for purpose Paediatric Inpatient Ward and Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). It will also provide a new fit for purpose Medical Laboratory for the hospital. This will help to enable equity of service and support the holistic patient / whanau focused health care service provision that is one of the Northland District Health Board’s mission statements.
It will more closely connect the Paediatric Inpatient Ward and SCBU with the maternity and birthing ward creating a Women’s and Children’s healthcare hub.
