Nelson City Council owns 142 community housing units at nine locations around the city, which it rents to older people in need of community housing. The units are currently managed for the Council by the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust. Demand for subsidised housing in Nelson is continuing to outstrip supply. Waitlists for Council’s community housing have hit all-time highs over the last year, as they have for other providers.
Following a public consultation process, Council is looking for one or more potential purchaser(s), for some or all of the Community Housing Assets, who can upgrade and expand the housing stock. Our objective for any sale is to achieve an appropriate level of protection for both existing and future tenants' wellbeing and ratepayer interests.
We believe the best option is to work with organisations that bring specialist housing expertise and have opportunities to access government and other funding sources not available to Council. The purchaser or purchasers must:
(a) be a government agency or community housing provider that is registered with the Community Housing Regulatory Authority; and
(b) have a local housing presence in the Nelson district; or
(c) be a consortium which meets both of the above requirements.
This is a unique opportunity to buy a community housing portfolio with the potential to be expanded and upgraded.
