In response to an elevated occurrence of leaks in the Level 5 sprinkler pipes, a comprehensive inspection of the pre-action system's piping on Level 5 was conducted. The inspection findings confirmed that the Level 5 sprinkler system had not been installed in accordance with the original
design specifications and was not configured correctly as a pre-action system. Consequently, this subpar installation has led to accelerated corrosion within the piping. The extent of this corrosion indicates that the piping has reached the end of its operational life and necessitates replacement.
In order to maintain an effective pre-action system within the Level 5 galleries, it is imperative to install a replacement system that is not only efficient but also sustainable and easily maintainable. This new fire protection and control system must provide the requisite level of fire detection, early warning capabilities, and fire suppression to safeguard the well-being of staff, visitors, and the valuable collections all in accordance with the NZ Building Code and all other relevant NZ codes or standards.
The primary objective of this procurement initiative is to secure the services of a highly qualified main contractor. This contractor will be responsible for the complete design, sourcing, and installation of a new pre-action fire system specifically tailored to the Level 5 gallery at Te Papa, located at 55 Cable St, Wellington. This project will encompass the removal of the existing system, restoration of affected areas including the ceiling and walls, integration with the current fire panels/system, and the creation of a new sprinkler/valve set room to ensure proper drainage. The new system will be subject to a service, monitoring, and maintenance period by the installer through the warranty period. At the completion of the warranty period the system will be maintained as part of Te Papa’s Fire Protection Systems Master Services contract.
