The Mackenzie District has the third smallest usually resident population in New Zealand as well as having the tenth largest land area. Our usually resident population sits at around 5,000, and we have a high percentage of holiday-home owners. We welcome over 600,000 visitors staying overnight a year and many more travelling through.
Our District is diverse with significant industries such as agriculture (including aquaculture) and tourism; landscapes from snowcapped mountains, great plans, lakes and rolling green hills; and people from around the world visiting, working and retiring in the Mackenzie.
We have three major towns, a selection of smaller settlements, and extensive areas of high-country stations and farming.
The scope has been boiled down to:
- Improved roading layouts in Riddle Lane
- One way off SH8 into Riddle Lane
- One way out onto SH79 and Talbot Road.
- Pedestrian improvements from Carnegies to the Pharmacy
- Pedestrian improvements from Denmark St to the Pharmacy
- Pedestrian improvements across Riddle Lane
- Better wayfinding signage for vehicles, especially larger and towing vehicles
- Parking solutions for larger and towing vehicles
- Mapping and linking walking and cycle routes around schools, through Fairlie and connecting to rural trails
