The project will involve the corrective and formative pruning of the trees to both enhance their longer-term amenity and also to clear the State Highway and associated road signs, overhead services and lights.
It needs to be understood that this project is about taking care of the historic trees and leaving each tree with a balanced crown where reasonably possible, correctively pruning semi-mature and establishing trees to encourage good longer-term form while removing deadwood and any weak branches. In addition, we require an area of 5 metres radius to be cleared of vegetation (mainly suckers from Elms) and any debris including detritus to be collected and removed from site. The desired finish for each tree will be a tree that has a balanced crown and a clear area around the base of the tree with grass cut and suckers removed.
While undertaking the corrective pruning, weaknesses in any trees are to be noted and photographed and referred to the project manager for consideration of an appropriate action to take.
There are 14 trees which have been classed as juvenile or semi-mature which are included in the project. These trees specifically may have tree stakes and tree ties that will need to renewed or removed and mulched tree circles either created or maintained along with an application of fertilizer.
The remaining trees are classed as mature, however this group includes a range of tree ages and stages with the term mature more relating to the fact that the trees are past the need for staking and mulched tree circles. Mature trees also include all those remaining trees from the original planting 100 years ago.
The focus of the project is to undertake the best job reasonably possible rather that quickest job possible.
There are four trees that require removal and one which requires further inspection. These trees will be marked clearly ahead of work commencing. In addition, there is one tree that requires further inspection by the arborists and once work commences there may be a few others, when aerial access to the tree crowns is possible, that have to be considered for removal.
Trees that are removed are to have the stumps ground. There are in addition two existing stumps from trees that have been removed which are to be ground as part of the project.
