The Ministry for the Environment (the Ministry), is seeking proposals to field check areas of forest loss to determine whether deforestation has occurred.
The LUCAS programme at the Ministry for the Environment monitors land use and land-use change across New Zealand in order to determine the greenhouse gas emissions and removals associated with this activity, with a particular focus on forestry. This information is used to meet our international reporting obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol.
Deforestation is an important land-use change in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. Every year significant areas of forest are harvested but only a small proportion of this area subsequently undergoes a land use change (deforestation).
