Overview

The Whanganui Lion Monument, erected in 1891, was originally placed at the top of the hill, close to where the Sarjeant Gallery now stands. It was moved to its present location on the Veterans’ Steps in 1919. Despite regular maintenance and refurbishment its condition has deteriorated, largely because of the type of stone used in its original construction, and it is now in need of partial deconstruction and restoration to prevent collapse.

This is a job for specialist conservation contractors. The Ministry is looking for credible providers who have the capability, experience and infrastructure to deliver the restoration on time and within budget, whilst recognising that there are some risk factors relating to what may be discovered once partial deconstruction begins. In this regard, provision for contingency must be included in the bid.
