In May 2025, Hamilton City and Waikato District Councils agreed to form a publicly owned, Council Controlled Organisation (CCO), IAWAI to deliver water services across Hamilton City and Waikato District.

As part of their delivery of services from 1 July 2026, IAWAI is planning to consolidate all water and wastewater treatment plant renewals programmes undertaken for Waikato District and Hamilton City for a consistent and seamless delivery for the next nine years. However, Watercare will continue to deliver the Waikato Districts water and wastewater treatment plant renewals until July 2028, at this point, all renewals will be delivered by IAWAI.

IAWAI intends to go to market in November 2026 for a new long term panel contract arrangement. The upcoming opportunity will be seeking to appoint panel of suppliers for various water and wastewater treatment plant renewals related disciplines, categories, and specialist components. Suppliers are expected to have strong track record and capability to support our ongoing and future programmes of work.
