In May 2025, Hamilton City and Waikato District Councils agreed to form a publicly owned, Council Controlled Organisation (CCO), IAWAI to deliver water services across Hamilton City and Waikato District.
As part of their delivery of services from 1 July 2026, IAWAI is planning to consolidate all three waters network renewals programme currently undertaken by Waikato District and Hamilton City Councils under one entity for a consistent and seamless delivery for the next decade. However, Watercare will continue to deliver the Waikato renewals until July 2028, at this point, all renewals will be delivered by IAWAI.
IAWAI intends to go to market in March 2026 for a new long term three waters network renewals contract arrangement. The upcoming opportunity will be seeking to appoint local Tier 2 and Tier 3 contractors with established physical office and operational base within Waikato region and with strong renewals construction capability to support our ongoing and future programmes of work. We will consider specialist contractors from outside the region.
We aim to establish a partnership that enables long-term collaboration supporting programme stability and efficiently delivering better outcomes for IAWAI, suppliers and the customers.
