Trains are a vital part of Wellington's public transport network. More than 11,000 commuters take the train into and out of Wellington each day of the working week. Without rail services, congestion on the region's roads would reduce the quality of life, produce poorer environmental outcomes and weaken the economy.
Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) regularly monitors services and carries out service reviews to better meet passengers' needs and to ensure ratepayers are getting value for money. Research shows that high quality customer information systems are a key driver to overall public satisfaction with public transport services; especially at times when there are disruptions to the network. The services are marketed under the Metlink brand name.
Transdev Wellington is the operator of Wellington's Metlink rail network. It is a partnership of Transdev Australasia and Hyundai Rotem. Greater Wellington Regional Council awarded the contract to operate and maintain the network in December 2015, commencing 3 July 2016.
The current Customer Information System at Wellington Rail Station no longer meets business, customer or user requirements. GWRC and Transdev have recognised a need to improve the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the delivery of travel information to customers using the Wellington Rail Station.
