Overview

EECA has developed a new programme to accelerate the use of solar energy on New Zealand farms.

A key part of this programme is evaluating the use case for pairing battery energy storage systems with solar arrays on farms. The use case for installing batteries with solar systems on New Zealand farms is yet to be proven across a range of farm types, energy profiles and locations.  Currently the economics for including batteries can be poor due to high upfront costs, however there are many benefits to using batteries including providing grid resilience.

In order to gather data on the economics of using solar and battery energy storage systems for different farm types, systems and locations, and to develop representative use cases, EECA intend to open a Request for Proposals (RFP) on 18th September 2025 inviting farmers to apply for co-funding to accelerate a range of solar & battery system installations on farms.

New Zealand farming entities will be invited to apply to the RFP through an application process on EECA’s webpage: https://www.eeca.govt.nz/co-funding-and-support/products/solar-on-farms/

No direct response is required to EECA with this notice, but we encourage New Zealand-based farmers to talk with solar & battery energy storage solution system installers to arrange at least 1 quote to support strong project applications.
