The Electricity Authority is seeking to contract with a highly skilled and competent Provider, able to deliver accurate and reliable forecasts of intermittent generation (e.g. wind and solar) in the New Zealand electricity market, for the purpose of ensuring other market participants can make well-informed generation and consumption decisions.
Through this process, the Authority hopes to explore providers’ ability to offer a centralised forecasting service for all intermittent generation sites in New Zealand. We also seek to explore the opportunity for a centralised forecaster to submit offers on behalf of intermittent generators on a commercial basis.

The Electricity Authority is pleased to announce that the contract for a centralised forecast provider for intermittent generation in the New Zealand electricity market has been awarded to DNV Services Ltd.

The Authority is committed to supporting a more efficient and secure electricity system. As more intermittent generation—such as wind and solar—enters the market, accurate forecasting is increasingly important to a reliable power supply, efficient resource use and minimizing costs for consumers.

Currently, forecasts for intermittent generation can be highly inaccurate close to real time. This can lead to reliability risks, inefficient use of resources, and higher costs for consumers. The new service aims to address these challenges by providing a centralised, high-quality forecast that intermittent generators can use when making electricity offers.

The centralised forecaster will also offer a commercial service to submit offers on behalf of generators who choose to use it. This supports innovation and competition in forecasting, while ensuring all participants remain responsible for the accuracy of their offers.

This award reflects the Authority’s ongoing commitment to improving market outcomes through better information, smarter tools, and stronger system performance. We are confident DNV Services Ltd. will help deliver a reliable, future-focused service that benefits all electricity consumers in Aotearoa New Zealand.
