Overview

Central Otago District Council is looking to engage an experienced and qualified physical works contractor to deliver structural maintenance, and refurbishment works on Bridge 191 (Little Valley). Located on Little Valley Road near Alexandra, Bridge 191 crosses the Manuherikia River and provides a vital connection for rural residents, local farms, recreational users of the Otago Central Rail Trail and key council assets.

The proposed works aim to extend the life of the bridge and increase its allowable axle load capacity, ensuring it remains safe and serviceable for future use. The project includes replacement of key structural timber components, strengthening of connections to a previously retrofitted pedestrian walkway, and minor preventative maintenance to the existing steel trusses.

This procurement supports the delivery of infrastructure renewal activities included in the 2025–2034 Long Term Plan and 2025/26 Annual Plan. A temporary Bailey bridge—already procured under a separate contract—will be installed approximately 1 km south of Bridge 191 to minimise disruption during construction.
