Located on the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River, the South Library and Service Centre has been on the site for the last 20 years. The facility was badly damaged in the 2010/2011 earthquakes. Temporary strengthening work carried out in 2013 made the facility safe enough to occupy, but substantive repair work is yet to be carried out.

The primary focus of the project is the community, and the reconnection of the building to the river that runs along the north side and wraps to the east along with how the community interacts with the facility and the landscaped space surrounding.

The facility will continue to bring together a wide cross-section of the community into this warm, welcoming environment.

In parallel with the development of the design mana whenua shared the cultural narrative and naming for the new facility. The community Board formally accepted the gifting on this name, Ōmōkihi, in February 2024.

Council now seeks a Contractor to deliver the vision, under a traditional model based on a fully detailed design. These facilities are a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with Council and their wider team to deliver another facility that will serve a community for generations to come.
