The purpose of this project is to conduct necessary renewals for the existing ferry pontoon at Bayswater Marina. The existing pontoon is close to end-of-life and will require renewals of piles and structure to continue operations.
The marina, including the existing pontoon, was constructed in 1996-1997, with ferries operating from 1997. The gangway to the pontoon was replaced in October 2014.
Over time, the pontoon has been damaged by berthing impacts, storms, and regular use by ferries. There is evidence of cracking and overloading in the pontoon, and the existing fender piles are undersized for the ferries used. In addition, the existing boarding platform overhangs the pontoon by 0.5m and adds to the eccentric loading, causing the pontoon to increasingly twist and list. The renewals work on this pontoon would address the new conditions imposed by the existing fleet with a targeted to increase its useable life until the end of 2031.
