Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI) – Background
For the last 20 years, Auckland’s eastern suburbs have experienced rapid population and economic growth creating significant increase in travel demand. It is the only metropolitan area in Auckland without access to a rapid or frequent transit facility such as heavy rail or dedicated busway.
The AMETI Eastern Busway is focused on developing an integrated, multi-modal transport system with much increased public transport use by providing a dedicated busway facility. AMETI Eastern Busway packages 2& 3 will contribute to growth in South East Auckland by providing improved transport choice and access to places of work, including updated landscaping and urban design and improved stormwater treatment thereby.
The AMETI Eastern Busway programme has been separated into four packages for staged implementation to be completed by 2025.
• Eastern Busway (EB) 1 (EB1 Panmure to Pakuranga Town Centre) is presently going through the consenting process.
• Eastern Busway (EB) 2 & 3 (EB2 Pakuranga Town centre, bus station, adjoining roads and Reeves Road Flyover, EB3 Pakuranga town centre to Botany Town Centre Busway) is for professional services for the design, documentation and consenting requirements for the EB2 and EB3 packages.
• Eastern Busway (EB)4 (EB4 Botany Town Centre currently in the strategy phase)
EB 2 and EB 3 include a 4km dedicated busway, separated cycleways, new footpaths running down an existing arterial road, design and consenting of a 600m long, 4 lane flyover and a 170m long, 4 lane bridge. Works require widening of the corridor to allow for these facilities while maintaining the present road corridor layout.
