What we need
This Registration of Interest (ROI) is the first step of a two-step procurement process for the Franklin Road Upgrade Project. Through this ROI Auckland Transport (AT) will identify up to three (3) suppliers who will be shortlisted for the second, Request for Tender (RFT), stage with the RFT planned for publication in January 2017.
What is important to us?
Franklin Road is an iconic tree lined boulevard within Auckland’s central area that has been an integral part of Auckland’s history and has become a major draw card for Auckland residents and visitors during the annual Christmas light activities.
The current condition of footpaths, kerbs, on street parking areas and carriageway is poor and in need of extensive renewal and upgrade. The upgrade involves widening of 900m length of Franklin Road between Ponsonby Road and Victoria Street West. A key issue to address is how the existing road can be widened to accommodate two additional cycle lanes and parking without major disruption to road users and business, retail and residential customers and without causing unacceptable environmental damage to the trees lining Franklin Road. The upgrading will be challenging because not only does this section of road carry 14,000 vehicles per day but the top portion of the road is lined with mature specimen trees which will need to be protected and in particular, their root systems. Accordingly, the final design will need to take into account protective measures for future tree and root growth. Because of the disruption that will be caused by the works to adjoining properties and road users, there will need to be a high level of community engagement to ensure residents’ needs are canvassed and addressed.
