Overview

We are seeking to develop an understanding of the Tāmaki Makaurau communities most vulnerable to tsunami-related hazards and why.

Using revised tsunami evacuation maps, this project will develop a vulnerability assessment that looks more holistically at who the communities are that may be impacted by the revised evacuation maps and what makes them vulnerable to tsunami.

Criteria for the vulnerability assessments will need to take into account demographic and spatial information as well as inherent levels of resilience (using the National Disaster Resilience Strategy as a guide) including social infrastructure (i.e., marae, community groups), degree of community cohesion and social networks and activities that contribute to that community’s capacity to cope with an emergency and recover with greater ease. Targeted and purposeful engagement with iwi and mana whenua and impacted communities may be required.

The outcome will be a prioritised list of communities most at risk of tsunami hazards in Tāmaki Makaurau that uses different types of data and measures to holistically understand tsunami risk. This will be used as the basis for an options analysis of targeted physical and social interventions and measures Auckland Emergency Management will use to reduce tsunami risk and increase preparedness across the region.
