Overview

Project Activation sets the stage for the Placemaking programme to be undertaken. Activation scope typically provides assets for people to connect with. For example, the supply and installation of new containers on Wynyard Bases fitted out so people can experience a library or piano in a unique setting; and interactive/informative signs that compliment events and/or festivals.

The focus is to provide kit of parts to activate a space previously underutilised. To maintain the attention of the users, themes and activities are regularly reviewed and refreshed.

The waterfront is a high-profile location, where the activation scope encourages people into the space. Recent tests and trials have included installing basketball courts and futsal court and wheels kit for skateboarding, bike, inline skate and scooter users. Activation works have included informative and interactive signage that compliments events and festivals.

Additional testing and trialling are required to allow for further activation in this dynamic setting to inform the development works. The newly created open space offers an opportunity to provide additional materials and activities to enhance people’s experience - this includes design and build of temporary infrastructure.
The works will also help to address anti-social behaviour as it will bring more people to the space for passive surveillance through activation and events.
