Overview

Wellington Botanic Garden is part of Council’s Parks Sport and Recreation business unit. The garden receives around 1.2 million visits each year making it one of the top visitor destinations in the city. It is well known for its Spring Festival, Tulip Sunday and its rose garden for which it recently won a ‘World Garden of Excellence Award’. The Botanic Garden is a five star Garden of National Significance under the RNZIH’s NZ Garden Trust accreditation scheme.
Wellington Gardens comprises the Wellington Botanic Garden, Otari Wiltons Bush, Truby King House and Garden and the Bolton Street Cemetery.
The Children’s Garden Project focusses on the four core plant services of fibre, food, construction and medicine. It will give children an immersive and enjoyable insight into people’s dependence on plants for life and the interconnectedness of all things.
The 1500sqm hillside garden near the Wellington Botanic Garden visitor centre will be a place for children and families from all backgrounds. It will build community awareness of the diversity of plants – and the diversity of the people who live together in this city.
It is uniquely placed to offer compelling experiences and stories which will influence children, families and communities about our dependence on plants. It will promote intergenerational sustainability to an estimated 5000 or more children each year including schools from around the country who visit the city. Every child and every family will be welcome in this special garden.
