Solomon Islands – Offshore Fisheries Advisors (two new roles)
• Two-year assignments in the Solomon Islands
• Policy role (70 days per year with possible extension) and Compliance role (50 days per year)
• New Zealand Government support programme
The Mekem Strong Solomon Islands Fisheries (MSSIF) Programme is a partnership between the New Zealand Government and the Solomon Islands Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR). The goal of the Programme is sustainable development and management of fisheries resources to ensure long-term benefits for the people of the Solomon Islands. To assist with this programme, two new Offshore Fisheries Advisor (OFA) roles have been created that will contribute to the achievement of the goal and outcomes of MSSIF.
OFA Policy - the key focus and responsibilities of this role will include (among other things):
• Mentor and coach MFMR’s Director, the Deputy Director Offshore and the economist and support other key MFMR staff regarding implementation of the tuna management and development plan, with a view to helping maximise economic and/or social
benefits from the offshore fisheries; and
• Mentor and support MFMR staff in provision of offshore fisheries policy advice, the application of working support tools (Information systems, SOPs) and broader capacity development issues.
OFA Compliance - the key focus and responsibilities of this role will include (among other things):
• Mentor and coach MFMR’s Deputy Director Offshore, the Noro-based compliance team and support other key MFMR staff, in particular the Director of Fisheries, regarding the application of working support tools (Information systems, SOPs) and broader
capacity development issues; and
• Mentor and support MFMR staff to implement the Catch Documentation System.
