Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) require forest modelling and carbon projections to be completed to assist in setting the baseline forest management reference level over 2021 – 2030. The forest reference level provides a projected baseline of net emissions for forests categorised under forest management within New Zealand’s 2030 emissions reduction target.
These forests comprise of pre-1990 forest (planted and natural forests) and post-1989 forests that have reached their average carbon stock and transitioned to forest management.
MPI require modelling and research to be undertaken to determine the potential additional carbon that could be stored in pre-1990 forests for growth above baseline business and usual levels.
