The New Zealand Government has partnered with the Government of Vanuatu to assist the Vanuatu Fisheries Department to promote sustainable management and development of Vanuatu’s marine fisheries resources to ensure sustainable resource utilisation for now and future generations. The adviser will also support private sector-led fisheries development initiatives to develop the fisheries sector, create employment opportunities and increase economic return, improve livelihoods and ensure sustainable and safe protein security for the local population.

The key objectives for the Offshore Fisheries Adviser are to:

• Provide expert fisheries management advice and assistance to Fisheries Department staff and stakeholders.
• Build capability within the Vanuatu Fisheries Department (VFD) to facilitate the sustainable development of offshore fisheries.
• Coordinate inputs into the effective implementation of the National Tuna management plan, fleet management plan Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) National Plans of Action (NPOA) and the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation) Port State Measure.
